The New Ford Fiesta, 1.4 TDCi Introduction

New Fiesta TDCi (Baby Focus)
This page gives a brief description about the new generation 1400 TDCi engine, sourced from Fords New Fiesta brochure. The New fiesta went into production January2002 and was later officially launched April 2002 initially as a five door with the 3 door launched shortly afterwards
The new shape Fiesta with its focus style looks has the latest technology in diesel engines, the new diesel engine for the fiesta is now only 1400cc (Duratorq TDCi), using second generation electronically controlled common rail injection system.

TDCi stands for Turbo Diesel Common rail Injection, it offers improved performance and lower diesel knock noise, making the engine smoother and giving better fuel consumption. It also has a unique "Overboost" system which gives you greater acceleration ability when needed for such as overtaking.   I decided to add this page as the New Fiesta Diesel "Duratorq" engine is the very latest in Diesel technology, unlike conventional diesels that have mechanical injection pumps with independent feeds to the injectors, the Duratorq engine hasn't, it has a common rail feeding the electrically operated injectors via high pressure reservoir pump,
Ford Common Rail Injection

A high-pressure pump supplies the fuel to the common rail, which is also a high-pressure reservoir. The fuel is then delivered via the injection valves, which receive their commands from an electronic control, the injector driver module (IDM). The majority of traditional diesel engines have available an independent cylinder fuel supply. A distributor pump driven by the engine feeds the fuel through a separate line to the cylinder injection nozzle.

With the common rail, the injection point and the injection quantity can be adjusted considerably more accurately to the needs of the engine.
The Advantages:- performance tuning - economy - lower emissions - smoother running characteristics

The new Duratorq TDCi engines monitor their own noise level and thus avoid adverse running conditions. The monitoring instrument used is a piezoelectric vibration sensor. This is located in the engine block between the cylinders and registers the vibrations that occur there. These are transmitted to the processor of the electronic control system (IDM). Exceptionally strong shocks are immediately reduced by adjusting the fuel injection programme. A slight change in the fuel quantity allows the engine to strike more refined notes again.

Advanced injection is critical for the smooth running characteristics of the direct injection diesel engine. The deliberate delivery of small quantities of fuel, the so-called pilot injection, before the main quantity, has a positive influence on the combustion process. The more gentle increase in combustion pressure improves the smooth performance of the engine. This not only gives a more gentle pitch to the originally harsh noise generation of the diesel engine, it also improves combustion efficiency.
