My Fiesta 1.4 TDCi, Fuel Consumption

Fuel Consumption - Seasonally adjusted by
Ford??
The only thing, (so I thought) that doesn't live up to the ford brochure hype is the
fuel consumption figures, Ok, we all know they are seasonally adjusted numbers
to make them look good, but read on. I've now done numerous tests to find the
true mpg figures, Ford say for the Fiesta Finesse (if I remember right), 53mpg
Urban-76mpg Extra Urban(76 mpg??? mmm..., must be a typing error!!) 65.7mpg
combined, under controlled Ford test conditions.
My test consists of combining motorway driving in the fast lane in the flow of
traffic at a quiet time of day, and winding country A and B roads of varying
speeds, my mpg tests returned figures of around 46-50mpg. running around
locally, the worst figure, resulting from hard driving was just over 43 miles
per gallon. My trips to work which are short 8.5 miles each way return around
47mpg.
The best results I have got up to yet was 60.95mpg & 63.45mpg, with
keeping the engine speed around and below 2600rpm (which equals to 70mph on the
motorway), also at the varying speed limits with the usual motorway road works
slowing the journey down over a distance of just under 170 miles. To achieve
these figures I have had to totally alter my driving style. The goal was to
break through the 70+ mpg barrier which I finally did but only once. Read on....
18th May 2003. Well, it seems I owe Ford an apology, after nearly 5
months of owning my Fiesta TDCi, I have finally achieved the 70+mpg mark for the
first time. The actual figure I reached was 73.94 mpg!!! and believe it or not I
wasn't even trying to get a good mpg result, just driving along in the flow of
traffic on A roads and a bit of a motorway stretch thrown in.
21st September 2003. Well, I've just came back from Europe in my TDCi,
The fuel consumption averaged around 43mpg. The car was fully
loaded up with 4 people, a roof box with a set of 3 suit cases, and the boot was
also crammed to the hilt with stuff you supposedly need for your holidays (so
the wife assured me!!) The roads were all motorway over the whole trip we did
about 1,100 miles (1760km) and used about 25.5 gallons of Diesel and driving at speeds of around 90mph give or take 10mph
